As Thanksgiving draws near, it’s a natural time to reflect on gratitude and its place in our lives. I believe gratitude can be a powerful personal and professional development tool. Gratitude does more than uplift our mood—it reshapes our mindset, fosters resilience, and enhances well-being. Looking back on my student and teacher experience made me realize how adopting a growth mindset has influenced my life significantly. In the beginning stages of my higher education journey, I viewed difficulties in my studies as hurdles that could either propel me forward or hold me back entirely. There were instances where I questioned my abilities and whether I truly fit in or possessed the skills needed—typical uncertainties that many first-generation students face. However, over time, embracing a growth mindset enabled me to view these challenges as chances to expand and enhance my skills, viewing them as obstacles to my achievements. It was never about achieving perfection but showing perseverance and openness to learning in situations.

 

Being an educator has completely changed since I embraced a growth mindset. It's about me and how I lead and support others in their growth journeys. This mindset has helped me see each interaction or challenge as a learning experience rather than a hurdle to overcome to reach a goal quickly. I've learned to appreciate the process—the ups and downs instead of focusing on the result constantly. I learned to welcome feedback and to adjust my approach to better suit my students' needs. This approach helped me empower them to see their potential as constantly expanding and evolving. This growth-focused approach continues to shape how I lead, learn, and support those around me, reinforcing the belief that our capacity to grow is limitless with the right mindset.


The Science of Gratitude and Kindness and How They Influence Our Well-being


The Brain Connection on Gratitude and Kindness: When we show gratitude and kindness towards others or express thankfulness for things in our lives, our brains release dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter. These are chemicals that make us feel good and improve our mood and overall sense of well-being. Both gratitude and kindness trigger this cycle that strengthens pathways in our brains linked to emotional resilience and a sense of satisfaction. Thus, by practicing gratitude and kindness, we set off a chain reaction that uplifts our happiness. This gratitude-kindness loop is transformative, helping us navigate challenges with optimism and empowering us to foster a supportive and compassionate environment.

In addition, recognizing personal achievements and showing compassion towards oneself and others helps maintain a balanced outlook, reducing stress levels and fostering happiness. 


Thus, when we embrace a mindset of appreciation, compassion, and kindness, we redirect our attention from what we lack to what we have, enabling us to tackle our aspirations with enthusiasm, inner strength, and a greater sense of direction. This boosts our efficiency and dedication and elevates the spirits of those near us, encouraging energy toward achieving personal and career triumphs.

Reflecting on gratitude and kindness has deepened my understanding of the difference between compassion and kindness and how each influences the workplace. However, compassion alone is internal—it doesn’t inherently lead to outward support or acknowledgment.
